Kick Off The National Water and Sanitation Information Centre Print E-mail

The National Water Supply and Sanitation Working Group (Kelompok Kerja Air Minum dan Penyehatan Lingkungan, Pokja AMPL), led by Ministry of National Planning, collaboration with WASPOLA Facility,  held a national workshop to kick off the national water and sanitation information center (Pusat Informasi Nasional Air Minum dan Penyehatan Lingkungan, PIN AMPL), in Jakarta, 13 April 2010. The workshop, took place at Hotel Akmani  Jakarta, was attended by around 50 participants with various background, such as: Pokja AMPL members, Ministry of Health (MOH), Ministry of Home Affair (MOHA), Ministry of Public Works (MPW), Ministry of Environment (ME), Ministry of National Planning (MNP), UN Habitat, World Bank, Unesco-IHE,  Press (Kompas Daily, Suara Karya, Media Indonesia, Jakarta Post, Suara Pembaruan, etc), Radio ARH 68H,  PAMSIMAS, LIPI (Research Agency), WASPOLA Facility, USDP, WES-Unicef, STBM, CK-Net.

Opening remarks addressed by Mr. Budi Hidayat, Director of Housing and Settlement (DHS) for MNP, where in his remarks said that WSS sector development is facing a situation where accurate, reliable and availability is frequent questioned. Inline with Budi, Mr. Gary Swisher, WASPOLA Facility Team Leader, said that PIN AMPL has been conceptualized by WASPOLA and Pokja AMPL from 2008, aimed to bridge the WSS information sharing among wider stakeholders. “PIN AMPL is conceptualized as exit strategy of WASPOLA-2, and continued implementation in WASPOLA Facility phase” said Gary.

Mr. Oswar Mungkasa, Head of section drainage and solid waste, stated that PIN helps stakeholders in getting the data and information of water, sanitation, drainage and solid waste matters. “A few problems in WSS sector are lack of data availability, lack awareness and commitment to sharing each other, so that’s why PIN initiated and expected by its existence our problem is reduced” said Oswar.
PIN AMPL is a resource center functioned to collect, analyze, and disseminate data and information related to water and environmental and sanitation development. The reason of why PIN need to be established, such are:

  • WSES development needs support for completion,  accuration, comprehensive, and accessible from data availibility and informations
  • Many lessons learned and experiences need to be documented and shared for better improvement in WSES development
  • WSES development mainstreaming needs a massive and sustainable information dissemination

PIN’s vision is to make National PIN AMPL  as reference to wider stakeholders in finding out information of WSES. PIN goals (i) establishing information system which can be maintained as  a knowledge management, and (ii) responding to the needs of  WSES data and information from the stakeholders (practician, activist, academician, private sector, and community). To realize these goals, PIN will conduct some activities, such as:

  • Collecting and maintaining references
  • Collecting, maintaining, analyzing, and presenting WSES data
  • Disseminating WSES information through communication activities and event, using digital and printed media and publication
  • Collecting and maintaining data and information related to Water Supply and Environmental Sanitation
  • Providing the needs of data and information related to Water Supply and Environmental Sanitation;
  • Disseminating information, findings, and key messages through intensive communication, advocation, and mass-media involvement activities

PIN will be supported with three pillars, are: Data Management, Library and Communication.
Mr. Randy Salim, External Communication Officer for World Bank Office Jakarta, who presented experience of World Bank in managing knowledge management system, said that PIN AMPL has to be developed with clear positioning in WSS sector players.  Meanwhile, Mr. Carel Keuls, Team Leader of WRIM Unesco-IHE, said that PIN establishment need a professional support where people can access it easier. “PIN AMPL need to design who the target audience, scope, what things want to be delivered, and how to ensure its sustainability” said said Keuls.

Participants workshop also provide some suggestions how to link PIN AMPL with various Center of Information those who already set up in each institution, particularly in data management, library and communication/publication aspects.

The workshop was closed by Oswar Mungkasa, who remain that this workshop is a starting point and needs strong support from the audience to realize PIN’s vision and goals. A small team was created to formulate result and input from the workshop.
